|
| Baggage | Soft bags are preferred & are easier to stow on the boat |
| Clothes | You won’t need many! It will be warm in the summer, day and night. In May or September a jumper & jacket may be welcome, as there could be the chance of some rain. ( some jackets available onboard). Onboard there won’t be much need for anything more elaborate than T-shirt and shorts and a tight fitting hat. Shore clothes for evening meals & exploring. |
| Climate | The best period to visit the Greek islands is from May to October. Peak temperatures in high season summer months (July, August) can reach 38°C (100°F), and the water surface at that point reaches a very pleasant 26°C (79°F) or more. Spring starts in April and can bring some rain showers although few, but the autumn months, September and early October, are ideal for travel – usually still warm, and quieter. In the off-season the beaches are less crowded, weather, however, remains fairly stable and the water is still agreeably warm. The prevailing wind in the summer is the “Meltemi”, which blows from the North /North West. It begins in June, blows stronger in July and August. It may blow for a few days at a time. During spring and autumn, you may also have to deal with strong winds from the South. (See 'Routing') |
Electrical | On the boat there is a 12 volt & limited 240 volt supply (under 500 watts) : a car cigarette lighter socket is available to recharge your phone - please bring your own charger etc. Hairdryers are a problem, unless they are under 500 watts! (Most are rated around 1500 watts) Go natural like I do..! Yachts are by their very nature, self-contained environments with limits on resources - your assistance with conserving power whilst onboard ensures we can anchor away from the noise of busy villages. |
| Emergencies | The crime rate in Greece & the islands is low by European standards. Greek police are generally helpful when dealing with holiday-makers, although they can be slow when filling out reports. Always carry your passport in a safe place. |
Entry Requirements | Visitors from Australia, NZ, Canada or USA will be issued a visa at the port/airport of entry into Greece ,for a stay of up to 3 months. We are required to compile an official crew-list, for which we will need the full names, date of birth, nationality and passport number for all guests. All you need to do is give us this information in advance. |
| Flags | Maritime flag etiquette require a small boat to carry the flag of its country of registration at the stern, and a courtesy flag of the country in whose waters she is sailing - half-way up the mast. We are also permitted to fly ‘house flags’ . If you wish to announce your presence on board as a representative of your nation - bring with you a small to moderate size flag of your own country. |
Food & Drink | We are both culinary foodies, and love to source & eat fresh produce. Included in your holiday is a full healthy breakfast & lunch each day, plus bottled water and hot beverages. We will be dropping you at different island restaurants each night, but if you prefer a tranquil evening or two onboard 'under the stars'- we can provide pre-arranged 'themed' evening meals at a further charge of £25 per person including 2 glasses of wine. We can offer Thai / Spanish or BBQ nights if you wish to remain onboard. We can discuss this at the quotation stage of your booking. Our philosophy is to ensure you leave your wallet at home and just enjoy...
Please note: All guests whom come onboard have been thrilled by the beauty of our 'Themed Evenings', as it gives you the chance to experience anchoring in a totally secluded bay under the moonlight. (We recommend at least 1 during your weeks sailing holiday) Note: We will be purchasing our last minute fresh produce just before our intital departure from a local supermarket, so this will give you the chance to stock up on any alcohol & snack requirements. We do not supply any alcoholic beverages for guests, but fully encourage the consumption of these in moderation! |

| Health | No specific vaccinations are required here & EU citizens do not pay for emergency health care, though other nationals may. Hospitals and clinics are located in all major centres, while doctor's offices and pharmacies can be found in smaller tourist destinations. In spite of generally good health care system, it is best to take a few sensible precautions during your holiday. The most important is to avoid over-exposure to the sun, wear hat and quality sunglasses, and use a high-factor suntan lotion, especially during the hottest part of the day (11 a.m. till 3 p.m.). Drink plenty of water to avoid exhaustion and dehydration. Away from the main beaches there may well be sea urchins clinging to the rocks. If you notice their presence, the best solution is to wear plastic or other adequate shoes to enter and get out of the water safely. If touched their spines break off, and the wound easily goes septic. |
| Insurance | The yacht is covered by fully comprehensive insurance, but does not cover personal loss, medical expenses, cancellation and so on. You are strongly advised in your own interest to obtain adequate personal, medical and travel insurance. Make sure that your cover includes being on a charter yacht. The Owners/Skipper bear no responsibility for medical and associated charges incurred by the Charterers. |
| Language | Greek is a not an easy language to European ears. English, Italian, French and German – are spoken widely and make it very easy for us to get around. Almost anyone connected to the tourist industry, including waiters, and most young people, will have some impressive language abilities, with English as the most common. But any effort you do make will be welcomed. |
| Money | The currency of Greece is the Euro. Most currencies can be easily exchanged, and most shops, restaurants and galleries – anywhere accustomed to tourists – will be very flexible over what currencies they will accept. Cash machines accepting Visa and Mastercard etc. are very common, though much less so out on the islands. Travellers cheques can be changed at banks, but plastic is certainly more versatile. You can change money at the airport. Once out of the city, in particular on the islands, credit cards are not accepted in the shops and the type of small restaurants we like to visit. We advise keeping adequate local currency on your person for dinners ashore & purchasing personal items. |
| Mosquitoes | These are not a major problem in Greece, though there can be a few around after dark. Bring some ointment or spray if you are very sensitive to bites. To avoid this we carry mosquito nets for use in your cabin in the evenings. |
| Passports | Carry your passport at all times. You must be able to show some form of identification if required. If you are exceptionally organised you could keep a photocopy of the biographical details page in a safe location. Our yacht is a secure location as when you are off the vessel there should always be a member of crew onboard. |
| Routing | We do not have a 'set-in-stone' routing - due to the ever changing demands of weather. We always adjust our itinerary according to the winds to ensure you have time for leisurely breakfasts, yoga on some days, lunch-time anchors, swims, fishing , the list goes on... in-short, all the stuff that sailing is about! It is our philosophy to ensure we give you a great experience! Please Note: We adjust our itinerary around the many beautiful islands that the Dodecaese has to offer & although we will endeavour to be in a new location every night, we are at the mercy of the weather Gods! ( The Meltimi) Your comfort & safety is of the utmost importance to us, & on occasions weather conditions may dictate that we remain in the same location for more than 1 day or back-track our routing to get the best of the winds/weather conditions. |
| Sun Protection | The sun can be very strong in summer, and you'll get plenty of it. Sun screen are easily available here, and it is advised to use a factor 15 or above in the middle of the day. Dont spoil your holiday for the sake of a tan. A long sleeved shirt or sundress is advisable for hot sailing days. Dont forget a fitted lightweight hat that wont blow away... |
| Telephones | Mobiles witha roaming facility will work in most of the islands here - but texting has become the cheapest way to keep in touch with home. We have walkie-talkies onboard so that we can communicate with you whilst onshore. |
| Tipping |
A tip is not included in the price of meals or drinks. If you have enjoyed our fantastic service then we would appreciate a tip - typically this is about 10 per cent of the bill.
|
| Water | Water is very important in Greece, especially in summer months when there is likely to be a shortage on many islands. For that reason respect its use. In most harbours a local is appointed as 'water man' or perhaps there will be a mini-tanker for water too. On the whole, tap-water in Greece is safe to drink, unless a sign states otherwise. If you are not sure, add some water purifying tabs.Yachts are by their very nature, self-contained environments with limits on resources - your assistance with conserving water whilst onboard ensures we can anchor away from the noise of busy villages. Bottled water is always available and you will appreciate once onboard, that water is a most precious commodity. We do have showers inside the vessel, but when you get onboard you will see we have the perfect hot & cold solar showers on the rear boarding deck - just perfect for sunrise ambient shower time! Conserving water whilst onboard allows us to stay away from busy quays and maximises our privacy. Your assistance is appreciated! |
| Yoga | Yoga mats are supplied onboard if you wish to participate in a few sessions throughout the weeks sail. These will be ashore in sheltered areas, & some morning breathing & meditation techniques can be held on deck if you wish …. This will be tailored to your requirements…. |
